Cosmetic Expiration Dates…

You wouldn’t eat out of date food, so why would you apply out of date products to your skin?

Most of us women are guilty of holding onto cosmetics for a few years longer than we should. However there is a high risk of infection after applying an out of date mascara for example. You can conceal most blemishes with makeup, but its much harder to hide an infected eyelid from gone off mascara!!

All cosmetic packaging has a small logo on it like this one;-

How can I tell when a product has gone past its expiration? Cosmetics, like food, have tell tale signs that you should throw them out.

  • Mascara will dry out and become clumpy, making it harder to apply. I am fanatical about buying new mascara every 2 months because it becomes a home for bacteria due to the nature of the packaging. Every time you use mascara, air is pumped into the tube, drying it out.
  • Liquid products such as foundation, concealer and cream blush should be kept in a cool, dark environment. Its not a good idea to keep your makeup in your bathroom as the high temperature encourages bacterial growth. Keep an eye out for changes in colour and smell, this will indicate the only place for it is now in the bin!
  • Powder products such as compact foundation, pressed powder, blusher and eyeshadow can lose their colour after about 18 months. As this products are used around the eye area, be careful using them after this time as they can cause infection.
  • Lipsticks and Lipglosses contain oily ingredients and give off a definite smell when they are gone off.
  • Eyeliners and lipliners dry out eventually and they become hard to apply. You will notice they crumble or drag the skin when used.
  • Nail Polish doesn’t go off as such, but they do dry out over time. Shake the bottle and if it still comes out sticky or clumpy, its time to part ways.

Have a look through your makeup bag and make sure its a healthy one!
